Anyone who has ever forgotten to throw out the garbage knows all too well how menacing fruit flies could be. Once these little creatures invade your kitchen, there seems to be no way of getting them out. You can spray the trash can or clean the kitchen with disinfectants but these flies will always return.
If you are living in an apartment which requires residents to recycle, chances are that you have experienced this issue more than once. It is because the by-laws require you to keep recycling bins in your house and get rid of them once a week. If these bins aren't properly cleaned, they can be a breeding ground for fruit flies. When they get into your home, they just do not wish to leave. The worst thing about them is they lay eggs frequently and on anything they will land on.
Fun Facts About These Flies:
- A single fruit fly can lay up to 500 eggs at once
- Their life-cycle lasts only for a week
- Though they are mainly regarded as pests, they are able to contaminate food with harmful bacteria
While getting rid of the garbage and cleaning up the home is important, these flies will just move to another place in the house.
An effective way of catching and killing these flies is by using a food sample as bait, a jar along with a plastic wrap. Below is an easy guide on catching and
getting rid of fruit flies :
1. Get a baby food jar or any other small jar that you don't intend to use in the future. Wash it properly to get rid of smells. Ensure the jar has no smell.
2. Place a chunk of banana inside the jar. Having an odorless jar will ensure that the smell of the banana will control the surrounding air. You can try out other kinds of fruits but banana seems to work very well.
3. Cover the jar using a piece of plastic wrap and seal around the edges. With a pencil or pen, poke several holes in the plastic sheet. The holes should be big enough to allow the flies to smell the smell and go into the jar.
4. Identify an area inside the home where the most flies are and place the jar there. Within a few hours, you will notice the jar filling up with fruit flies. After one day, you will determine exactly how serious your fruit fly problem is.
Thus
how do you get rid of fruit flies from your home, there is your solution. This is a low cost, simple and safe means of getting rid of fruit flies. If possible, you should put the jar behind the trash can since you want it out of sight. You must empty the jar after every three days before the eggs hatch.
